Round 2 Redfield Old Boys

Hawkesbury Valley’s first home games for 2017 saw a continued improvement from all teams with wins in the two top grades

1st Grade: Win 36 – 12

Hawkesbury Valley’s 1st XV continued their good form with a solid win over last year’s finalists Redfield. They dominated the set plays especially in the scrums where Redfield had no answer with Dane Humphreys scoring 3 tries in succession after strong forward drives. Redfield’s only answer was to go uncontested in the scrums midway through the first half. This allowed them to throw on another couple of fast guys to try and run around Hawkesbury which is their forte. Despite this the Hawkesbury backline defence was up to the task and cut off their attack before it got a roll on.

With their tight 5 laying the platform and the loose forwards snuffing out any defensive plays Hawkesbury backs had plenty of clean ball to constantly turn Redfield around keeping them pinned in their own half. The longer the game went on the better Hawkesbury looked with the final score the indicator of their efforts.

2nd Grade: Win 19 – 17

Hawkesbury seconds came out of the blocks fast and troubled Redfield defence immediately. A great platform by the still forming forward pack set the stage for centre pairing Daniel Beckett and Jason de Joux to run riot through the many gaps. Luke Goodwin literally ran himself ragged with several fifty plus metre runs.

A couple of unusual calls from the referee in the second half saw the home team lose their hard earned advantage as the Redfield kicker’s big boot took back fifty metres each time. Hawkesbury’s defence regathered to defend their lead finishing the stronger of the 2 for a close win.

3rd Grade: Draw 21 - 21

An oh-so-close result for third grade with only a missed tackle in it. The final score was a fair indicator of the play with both sides running the ball well getting the crowd on their feet with some great running rugby. Tripoli Morecroft tore holes in the Redfield defence to give Hawkesbury an early advantage well supported by Dave Wikaira-Paul & Glenn Sutton. The halves pairing of Jay Williams & Beau Smith was working well as was the loose forwards Mo Rosadhie & Mal Kaczorowski. Dave Wilcox was outstanding in attack looking dangerous with every touch of the ball. Due to the pace of the game the Hawkesbury front row was tiring but Aaron Hildalgo accepted the challenge and was promoted to the front row. Hawkesbury’s fitness told and Redfield did what they do best and ran around for a couple of tries to get back into the game. Gene Peterson move to fullback hardened up their defence and with the late inclusion of birthday boy Frank Walker (45) got back into the game to tie the scores up.

Colts: Loss 10 - 55

Hawkesbury Colts came up against an outstanding Redfield outfit that has been together since they were 10 years old having come through the schoolboy ranks at the Redfield College. With nearly half a team changed from last week due to availability Hawkesbury started slowly as they found their combinations. Despite the score line Hawkesbury had some stellar performances with none better than Zach Fisher who once again blew everyone away with his raw ability. The Redfield outside backs did all the damage with their outside centre being easily the fastest man in Subbies rugby having the ability to draw defenders to him leaving gaps for his support players to run through. A steep learning curve for the boys but a great attitude and determination kept the talk positive while they sat together to watch the senior grades.
